D.E.C. Sheet Metal Inc. is a premier provider of precision sheet and plate processing — advanced laser cutting, CNC punching, bending, and assembly for diverse industries. With over 25 years of excellence, we drive innovation in metal fabrication.
As our operations expand, we're scaling our team with dedicated professionals who share our commitment to craftsmanship and precision. Explore the open role below.
Heavy Plate Handling • Rigging • Material Flow • Stock Control — Own the safe movement, physical organization, identification, visibility, and day-to-day control of raw-material inventory so production has correct material available and staged.
The Heavy Material Handler / Inventory Control Specialist is responsible for the safe, accurate, and efficient movement, storage, staging, identification, and physical control of steel plate, sheet, bar stock, remnants, work-in-process, and finished product throughout DEC Metals.
This role is specifically designed for an individual experienced in moving large, heavy, and irregularly shaped metal products, understanding that load weight, balance, rigging, lifting points, and safety must be evaluated before a move. Equally important, this person serves as DEC’s operational owner of physical inventory—knowing what is on the floor, where it is located, whether it is properly identified, what is usable, and what is becoming scarce before it affects production.
Safely move plate, sheet, bar, structural material, heavy work-in-process, and finished product using the correct forklift, crane, hoist, rigging, or lifting method.
Maintain real-world visibility of DEC’s physical stock and serve as the eyes and ears of Operations regarding plate availability, location, condition, shortages, and replenishment needs.
Protect grade, thickness, dimensions, heat/lot, customer ownership, job linkage, and other required material identity from receipt through use or shipment.
Place the correct material at the correct work center at the correct time and remove completed work/remnants promptly so machines do not wait unnecessarily.
Verify inbound material against purchase orders and receiving documents, identify discrepancies, and place accepted material into controlled storage.
Return usable remnants to controlled inventory, distinguish usable stock from scrap, and prevent avoidable material loss or duplicate purchasing.
Stage and load finished product safely, protect customer parts, and support stable weight distribution, dunnage, blocking, banding, and load preparation.
Keep stock areas, aisles, racks, staging zones, and travel paths orderly, accessible, and safe for people and equipment.
| # | KPI | What It Measures | Target / Standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Material Location Accuracy | Whether physical plate/raw material is in the location shown by the approved inventory control method. | 98%+ location accuracy on cycle counts; chronic variances investigated and corrected. |
| 2 | Inventory Record Accuracy | Accuracy of grade, thickness, quantity, identity, and other required stock information. | 98%+ inventory accuracy by count/value; no material recurring class of unexplained variance. |
| 3 | Stock Availability / Shortage Escalation | Whether low-stock conditions and likely shortages are identified before production is affected. | 100% known critical shortages escalated before scheduled job impact; replenishment concerns communicated promptly. |
| 4 | Material Traceability Compliance | Protection of required grade, heat/lot, customer ownership, job, and certification linkage. | 100% compliance where traceability is required; zero unidentified material intentionally released to production. |
| 5 | Material Staging Reliability | Whether correct material is available at the required work center when production needs it. | 95%+ planned staging completed on time; material-handling-caused machine waiting tracked and reduced. |
| 6 | Remnant Recovery / Scrap Discipline | Whether usable remnants remain identified and available for reuse rather than becoming uncontrolled scrap. | Usable remnants tagged/returned same shift; abnormal scrap or remnant loss investigated. |
| 7 | Safety / Handling Discipline | Compliance with forklift, crane, rigging, loading, suspended-load, rack, and material-handling controls. | Zero preventable serious handling events; inspections, near-miss reporting, and corrective actions completed. |
Routine material placement within approved storage rules; staging sequence within assigned priorities; use of approved handling equipment within training; removal of damaged rigging; temporary hold of unidentified/unsafe material.
Reorder points, rack/storage improvements, plate organization, remnant disposition, scrap controls, inventory-count cadence, material-handling equipment, aisle/layout changes, and workflow improvements.
Critical/developing stock shortages; unidentified material; receiving discrepancies; repeated inventory variances; unsafe lifts or damaged equipment; rack concerns; customer-owned material issues; conditions delaying production.
Learn DEC’s material types, stock locations, shop flow, forklift/crane/rigging expectations, receiving process, inventory-control method, production priorities, shipping practices, and material-traceability rules.
Establish disciplined plate/rack organization, verify baseline stock/location accuracy, tighten receiving/remnant identification, identify recurring inventory gaps, and begin proactive low-stock communication.
Own the daily material-control rhythm independently: accurate locations, clean staging, reliable cycle counts, visible replenishment concerns, traceable remnants, safe heavy-load handling, and clear storage/inventory improvement recommendations.
Ideal profile: A heavy-industrial Heavy Material Handler who respects large loads, understands plate and rigging, keeps the yard and shop organized, knows what material DEC has and where it is, sees shortages before they become production problems, and treats inventory visibility as an operating responsibility rather than an administrative afterthought.
